My Youth United Experience
I’m Marie Folz, and I am a senior at Mater Dei High School. Throughout high school, I have enjoyed being involved and have really found my love for community service. I first found out what Habitat for Humanity is really about when my mom, Beth Folz, began volunteering on Friday mornings at the office. Although at first I didn't initially want to be involved with Habitat and was more or less just helping out my mom, over the years, I really began to enjoy the time I've spent volunteering at Habitat.
The fall of my junior year, Sister Jane Michele approached me about joining a new youth group Habitat was trying to start up, Youth United. I was apprehensive at first, but after attending the first call-out meeting, I knew it was a group I wanted to be involved in. As meetings began, I found I had made the right decision in joining the group. I was lucky enough to be elected President, and have enjoyed taking on a leadership role in the group.
Being involved in Youth United has opened my eyes to what teenagers working together can do. After our group decided we wanted to raise enough money to build a house, we have worked hard to reach this goal. I also love volunteering on job sights and being able to meet the families that will get to move into the homes some day. It’s amazing getting to see how people working together can change someone’s life completely.
I love the time I've spent being involved in Youth United, and will miss not being involved in this amazing group next year when I am away at college. I have met truly amazing people, whether they are the families receiving a home or the staff at Habitat. Although, I won’t be a part of Youth United next year, I still plan to get involved in the college chapter at the university I attend. I encourage any high school student thinking about being involved in a community organization they can be passionate about to join Youth United. It has been an amazing experience for me, and I am so thankful for the time I have been able to spend with Habitat for Humanity.
