Build Site FAQ’s

We are officially reopen to community volunteers! We ask that if you are unvaccinated, please be prepared to wear a mask if you cannot socially distance on the job site. Some opportunities may have limited spots.

Should we see inclement weather on the day of the build, please check your email for cancellation notices. You will be notified up to one hour prior to the start time.

The first step in volunteering is to register with Meredith Dixon. This is crucial to our ability to plan for your work day and keep you safe on the site. Groups or individuals interested in volunteering should contact Habitat’s Volunteer Workforce and Safety Manager, Meredith Dixon, at 812-453-3810 or mdixon@evansvillehabitat.org.

To help us create a safe and enjoyable volunteer experience, every volunteer must register online in advance. This will help our site leaders to be better prepared with tools, materials, and projects for everyone. Online registration is required and can be found here.

To volunteer on Habitat build sites, individuals 18 and older may volunteer independently.

Ages 16 and 17 may volunteer in a limited capacity at a construction site. These volunteers are not permitted to participate in power tools or use ladders over 6 ft tall.

A minor registration waiver is required to participate on build sites. The waiver will be available again after Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

The commitment is up to you. You may volunteer one time, or as often as you wish. You may volunteer as an individual or as part of a group.

No specific skills are needed, but all skills are welcome. Safety is important, and so, therefore, we provide a free online safety training video. Click here and enter W8NAEBTG as Employee Access Code to view safety video.

Habitat build sites require volunteers to wear close-toed shoes, long pants, and clothes that you do not mind getting dirty, ripped, torn, or painted. Bringing your own tools is not necessary, but basic construction tools, like a hammer or nail pouch, are welcomed, but please label items with your name so they can be returned if found missing.

Habitat volunteers are encouraged to bring their own snacks, but we do not provide food. Water is available on job sites. Habitat volunteers break for lunch around 11 a.m. and return to the build site at noon.

Portable toilets are available for use on each build site.

Due to the fluid nature of a construction site, build site tasks can include crawl space prep, floor systems, building walls, raising walls, prepping trusses, installing siding, pre-insulation, painting, grass seed prep-work, and other assorted tasks to keep the build site clean and organized.

Habitat always encourages donations. If you would like to donate, visit Habitat’s donation page. Donations are not limited to monetary amounts, and build sites are always in need of cases of water bottles, Propel flavor packets, and snacks.
