Dr. James PorterStable Housing — Key To Addressing Health Disparities and Social Determinants of Health

Dr. James Porter serves as President, Physician Division, of Deaconess Health System.

A magna cum laude graduate with a BA in microbiology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and an MD from St. Louis University, Dr. Porter is board certified in both pediatrics and internal medicine.

Since joining Deaconess in 2000 as an adult and pediatric hospitalist, he has seen Deaconess grow from a single hospital and small primary care physician group into a major referral and teaching facility for over 1.2 million people in three states, garnering major awards along the way, including being the only HIMSS 7 (digital transformation in healthcare) inpatient and outpatient health system in Indiana.

Actively involved in the community, Dr. Porter has served on numerous boards including the IU School of Medicine – Evansville Community Advisory Committee, the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership (E-REP) and the United Way of Southwestern Indiana where he was board chair and 2019 United Way Campaign chair.

In “Stable Housing – Key To Addressing Health Disparities and Social Determinants of Health,” Dr. Porter will explore our growing understanding of the relationship between where people live and their health. Revitalization efforts in Jacobsville, with an emphasis on making healthy homes affordable and available, and creating safe and welcoming attractions and greenspaces are vital to improving our community’s overall health and wellbeing.
