“I’m blessed that I get to have a home of my own where I can raise my children and create a stable environment for them. I’m just thankful that Habitat gave me a chance to make a good future for my children and a place that we can call home.”

Future Habitat Homeowner
Amanda H.

Amanda H. has had some bumps in the road, but she still praises God for His continued blessings. She has three children, Latitia (28), Kanosha (16), and Amari (12), with the latter two still living in the home. The family loves spending time together and making memories. Amanda has worked at ResCare since 1994 in multiple positions, currently as an Area Supervisor overseeing the staff that cares for mentally handicap adults. “I really love my job, and I love my clients. I’ve been working there since I graduated high school,” Amanda says.

Amanda and her daughters have been living in the same rental home for over twenty years, but once her landlord decided to sell the property, she began looking for somewhere new. “Once I knew we had to move, I didn’t want to find another place to rent,” Amanda says. “I want to be paying on my own mortgage instead of someone else’s bills!”

Amanda had heard about Habitat from a couple of different friends, but it wasn’t until she saw the new Habitat homes built in the Bedford neighborhood that she decided to apply. “I was close to not being accepted, but luckily Habitat worked with me and accepted me into the program!”

Amanda’s involvement in the Habitat program has been rockier than others. In May of 2019, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had to get surgery. “I was off work for five months to recover, and that was hard because I love my job. I ended up having to go back for a second surgery, and they almost lost me on the table. But by the grace of God, I’m still here,” Amanda says. “I was worried that Habitat wouldn’t let me continue with the program, but they worked with me and still helped me get my hours by working in the office. I’m so blessed because even though I was going through a rough time, the Habitat staff helped keep my spirits up.”

Amanda and her daughters are so excited about their new home and are already making plans for how to decorate. “We’ll have a big backyard, and since I’ve learned so much from the construction sites, I might build a doghouse for our dog, Cupcake!” Amanda laughs. “I’m blessed that I get to have a home of my own where I can raise my children and create a stable environment for them. I’m just thankful that Habitat gave me a chance to make a good future for my children and a place that we can call home.”
