“I’m excited because this will be the first time I’ve owned my own house, and my daughter will be able to go out and play in her own backyard.  After I complete the homeownership program, I want to continue to help build Habitat homes and volunteer at the ReStore.  I want to help others build their homes from the ground up.”

Every Homeowner Has a Story

Future Habitat Homeowner
Cassandra R.

Cassandra R. is a caring individual and loving mother to her daughter Jhe’Nyla (5).  The family enjoys going to the zoo and shopping together.  Sometimes, they even go to other cities to visit different zoos.  Jhe’Nyla is in kindergarten this year and ready for the adventure.  Cassandra works full-time as a dispatcher at Professional Transportation, where she has helped ensure people get off the trains safely for the last 3 years.

The family currently lives in a 2-bedroom apartment in the Van Park area.  Cassandra states, “It’s rough … nasty even.  My daughter can’t go outside where we are to play.”  Cassandra was ready to make a change, when her cousin reminded her about the Habitat for Humanity homeownership program.

“My cousin is a Habitat homeowner, along with my grandmother and aunt.  So, when my cousin explained the things I needed to do to get into the program, I decided to work on my credit and apply.”

Since being accepted into the Habitat homeownership program, Cassandra has been working on her 300 hours of sweat equity – at the ReStore, out on construction sites with the Core Crew, and by taking homeownership classes at the Habitat Learning Center.  “I’ve been volunteering with people and learning about everyone’s experiences with Habitat.  It’s been neat.  I also really like working with the Core Crew and learning from them.”

“Since working toward a Habitat home, my life has changed a lot.  I have set goals of things I need to do.”

Looking to the future, Cassandra says, “I’m excited because this will be the first time I’ve owned my own house, and my daughter will be able to go out and play in her own backyard.  After I complete the homeownership program, I want to continue to help build Habitat homes and volunteer at the ReStore.  I want to help others build their homes from the ground up.”

“To those who helped get me here – thank you!  I appreciate everything you are doing for my family.”  Cassandra adds, “Core Crew, thank you for showing me how to build and for teaching all of us [future homeowners] the things we need to know as we become homeowners.”
