“I feel like becoming a homeowner will give my kids the stability that they need.  We won’t have to move every year, which will be great.  This is like a new start for my family.”

Every Homeowner Has a Story

Future Habitat Homeowner
Chelsea V.

Chelsea V. is a loving mother to her three boys, Josiah (6), Isaiah (5), and Noah (1). Chelsea enjoys spending time with her boys.  “We love to go to church together … that’s a big thing!  We also like going to the movies as a family.”  Chelsea is currently working as a Customer Service Associate at Lowe’s.  Prior to her three years at Lowe’s, she was in Human Resources for the Army National Guard for six years.

Chelsea and her boys are living in a three-bedroom rental home.  Although it is livable, Chelsea is paying more than she would like each month for rent.  “I’ve definitely struggled a lot to just be able to afford everything for my kids and me; we’ve lived paycheck to paycheck,” she says.  They’ve also moved around a lot, sometimes more than once a year, because renting isn’t ideal.”  Chelsea is ready for the stability that owning a home will give her and her family.

Chelsea learned about Habitat through her friends and coworkers, some of whom are Habitat homeowners.  They encouraged her to look into the Habitat homeownership program, but Chelsea knew that she had some things to fix up before she could apply.  “I had a goal to fix up my credit to where I knew I was going to be able to qualify for Habitat,” Chelsea explains.  “I knew I could apply again and again, but I wanted to get it right the first time.”

Chelsea finds the community hours, classes, and construction work fun and rewarding.  With this program, she has been able to learn more about herself as well.  “I have realized that I have a lot of determination, and through the Money Management classes, I’ve learned about saving money and the importance of having an emergency savings account,” Chelsea says.  “Going through this program has helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel.  I’m working towards an attainable goal, and I feel it at my fingertips.”

Once settled into her new home, Chelsea is hoping that she can go to college to pursue other career possibilities.  Having an affordable mortgage will also help establish her credit.  “I feel like becoming a homeowner will give my kids the stability that they need.  We won’t have to move every year, which will be great.  This is like a new start for my family.”

“I give all my thanks to God for making this part of His plan for me.  I prayed very hard for this opportunity for my family, and He’s been there every step of the way.”
