“This home means that I can start a new legacy for my kids. Everything starts at home, and those memories are what’s going to last forever.”

Future Habitat Homeowner
Danielle B.

Danielle is working hard to create a legacy for her two children, Terry (19) and K’Mya (10). Danielle currently works at Pittsburgh Glassworks and spends her free time finding peace in the kitchen and cooking for her family. After struggling with bad credit, Danielle didn’t think that homeownership could ever be possible for her family. But after watching Habitat houses spring up right on her block, Danielle’s perspective changed. Homeownership could finally be possible.

Danielle currently rents a home with a leaky roof and high rent. “My grandmother always told me that when I get a home, I should buy that home,” Danielle recalls. “I never listened. But now that Habitat has been building in my neighborhood, I’m the only one on the block that’s still renting! That gave me the motivation to partner with Habitat and build a legacy for myself and my kids.”

“When I went in to apply for Habitat, my expectations were very low,” Danielle admits. “I didn’t think I’d qualify at all. But what surprised me was how doable this program is and how affordable the home would be. I’d be able to pay this home off before I retire! This home will be in my family for generations, and my children will always have a safe and stable place to return. This gives me so much hope for the future.”

Family means everything to Danielle, and Habitat has become her second family. “I have become so close to the other future homeowners, the Habitat staff, and the Core Crew,” Danielle says. “My Habitat family saw something in me that I had never seen in myself. Since I joined this program, I have more faith in myself. I see what everyone else saw in me from the beginning, and that’s a wonderful feeling.”

While Danielle is excited to settle into a new home, she’s even more excited about what this means for her family’s future. “My whole family was raised in one house, and there are so many memories tied to that house, and that’s what bonds families,” Danielle says. “This home means that I can start a new legacy for my kids. Everything starts at home, and those memories are what’s going to last forever.”
