“My children and I wouldn’t have a future without this opportunity. But with the help of the sponsors and volunteers, now we have hope. This home means the world to us, and we’re so grateful for everything.”

Future Habitat Homeowner
Doretha B.

Doretha is a hardworking mother of six, Aliviya (18), Andrea (12), Za’kye (6), Jaylen (3), Jakylen (3), and Zanieyah (1). Aliviya is graduating from high school soon and plans to “break the cycle” by becoming a NICU nurse after college. “We like to do a lot of things as a family,” Doretha explains. “We love to cook and do crafts and family projects around the house. Together, we even built our staircase rail.” Doretha graduated from IvyTech with a culinary degree and currently works at a nursing home.

Doretha has faced a lot of hardships in her life. She suffered a stroke at a young age due to complications from her second pregnancy and the passing of her mother. When talking about her kids, Doretha says, “They give me my strength and the hope I need to accomplish everything in my life.”

Doretha and her children currently live in a four-bedroom house, but only three of the rooms are livable. “It’s roomy, so it works out, but we still have to share, and it’s just not ideal for the kids or me,” Doretha says.

Doretha learned about Habitat through her oldest kids’ grandmother, who owned a Habitat home. Then later, when she was pregnant with her youngest, her cousin and Habitat homeowner Alexis, told her to sign up and thought she would be a great candidate. After overcoming a few obstacles, she got approved. “I was really frustrated and discouraged, and I wanted to give up, but my best friend, Myesha, told me that this is something I needed and not to give up. I got a call three days later saying I was approved!” Doretha explains.

After entering the program, Doretha has been working harder. “I’ve always had a job and worked, but I have more initiative and more fight to get to the end since the end means a safe and stable home for my family,” she says.

This Habitat home will provide stability and a place to call home for Doretha and her family. After settling in, Doretha hopes that she can go back to school to further her education and to open up her own business one day. With facing adversity at such a young age, Doretha has learned that you have to work hard for everything you want and everything in life is a learning moment. “My children and I wouldn’t have a future without this opportunity. But with the help of the sponsors and volunteers, now we have hope. This home means the world to us, and we’re so grateful for everything.”
