“I appreciate the help that Habitat gives to local families. I’m so thankful for everyone that is helping our family reach the goal of owning a beautiful home.”

Every Homeowner Has a Story

Future Habitat Homeowner
Kat C.

Kat C. moved from St. Croix in the Virgin Islands to the United States in 2003 to be close to her brother. She wanted her two kids, Anias (14) and Nathaniel (9), to experience being with their only uncle since she did not get the chance to help raise his kids. “He’ll take the kids and go do stuff with them, but I didn’t get to experience that with his kids, so I didn’t want to make that same mistake with mine,” Kat explains. In their spare time, Kat and her kids enjoy having family nights by turning their living room into a movie theater or playing board games and UNO. Kat currently works at Digestive Care Center, where she handles patient scheduling and other administrative tasks.

Kat is currently renting a three-bedroom home. While the home works for her family, Kat mainly wants to have something to leave for her children later in life. “If I could pay someone else’s mortgage, I might as well pay my own.”

Kat’s parents always told her she needed a home for her and her children, something to leave behind for them. While working out at the YMCA, Kat saw a sign advertising Habitat, and she thought she would give it a try. She was contacted within a week or two to begin the homeownership program. “After moving to Evansville from Florida, I just wanted a more stable environment for my kids. I figured Habitat was the most rewarding path to take.”

When not at work, Kat spends a lot of time getting her sweat equity hours for Habitat. “It’s hard. It’s a long process, and it’s very time consuming, but I know it’s for a reason and a goal,” she says. “If I’m not at work, I’m volunteering with Habitat or other places in the community.”

After moving into her Habitat home, Kat says she’ll have some financial freedom. She’ll be able to pay her own affordable mortgage and save up to go back to school. “I want to be a nurse. It’s one of my goals to go to nursing school so I can help other people,” Kat says. “I appreciate the help that Habitat gives to local families. I’m so thankful for everyone that is helping our family reach the goal of owning a beautiful home.”
