“I wouldn’t be able to succeed in this program if it weren’t for my parents and my coworkers. I’m very thankful and excited. This home means so much for my son and me.”

Future Habitat Homeowner

When Sherita left the military in 2016, her sole focus became her son, Brandon (4). Sherita now works at Encompass Health as a Case Manager Assistant and attends Indiana Wesleyan online to get her bachelor’s degree in Human Services. Because of her hard-working attitude and dedication, Sherita was awarded Employee of the Year at Encompass in 2018. When she’s not working, Sherita loves to cook and spend time outside with her son.

Sherita and Brandon have been living with Sherita’s parents for the past three years. “Brandon and I share a room right now,” Sherita explains. “My two sisters and my niece also live with us. We love each other, but some days it’s hard.”

For Sherita, Habitat came at the perfect moment. “I didn’t know about Habitat until one of my coworkers told me about it. I thought they wouldn’t approve me, but something told me to apply – and I got accepted!” Sherita says. “When I told Brandon about our home, he didn’t really understand until he saw the foundation. He said, “Mommy, I’m so excited. I can’t wait to have my own room!” That’s my motivation right there.”

Sherita is confident that she’ll continue building with Habitat long after her home is completed. “I love working with the Core Crew because they teach you everything you need to know about building a home. I’m definitely going to become a Core Crew member so I can continue to work with these amazing men and women.”

Once moved in, Sherita says she’ll feel independent again. “I will be able to raise my son in our own home. I’ll be able to finish school and have a quiet place to study. Brandon will have a nice and safe yard to play in,” Sherita says, smiling. “I wouldn’t be able to succeed in this program if it weren’t for my parents and my coworkers. I’m very thankful and excited. This home means so much for my son and me.”
