“I want everyone we’ve met along the way to know that meeting them and having them in our lives has been one of the most beneficial things ever. I’m very grateful to all the volunteers, the Habitat staff, and my sponsor. I hope this is a partnership that will last forever.”

Every Homeowner Has a Story

Future Habitat Homeowner
Vernice J.

To Vernice, her whole life is about her children. Vernice has three kids; Ronald, Azariah, and Colin. Ronald lives upstate with his wife and two children. Azariah (20) loves music and has been writing songs for years. Vernice’s youngest, Colin (17), is a senior at Harrison High School and enjoys drawing and reading. “My children are my life. All three of them, plus my daughter-in-law and two grandbabies,” Vernice says. Together, the family loves to watch movies and go to the pool during the summer. Vernice currently works at the TJ Maxx distribution center as a warehouse associate.

Vernice and her children currently live in a two-bedroom apartment, and Azariah and Colin have to share a room. “The kids can’t invite their friends over, and there’s just no space,” Vernice says. The family moved to Evansville in October of 2014 as a fresh start. “My parents gave us the invitation to start over because things weren’t going too well there. We came to Evansville and lived with my parents for a few months before getting our own place,” Vernice says. “Starting over has been very positive for us because I’m able to take care of my children without worrying so much. Thanks to my sister-in-law, Janette, I’ve become more in tune with my faith, and I’m more trusting in God. I believe that coming to Habitat just proves how much God has blessed us.”

Vernice first learned about Habitat from her coworker, who happens to be a Habitat homeowner. “My coworker told me about Habitat and said, ‘I think this would be great for you.’ So, I went in and applied,” Vernice says. “I actually got denied the first time, but they told me what I needed to do. I transferred to the TJ Maxx distribution center, which helped me qualify for Habitat. I went back, applied again, and was accepted!” Vernice says that the Habitat program is the best thing for her family right now. “Getting involved with Habitat has put everything into place. I have come full circle, and it’s a real blessing.”

Since partnering with Habitat, Vernice says her experiences have all been very positive. “All the people here at Habitat are really nice. It’s work, but it’s fulfilling work because you’re doing something to help someone and, in turn, they’re helping you,” Vernice says. “Learning how to budget properly is something I want to be able to hold onto always. It has been very beneficial to my family. If I can continue to follow a budget, then the sky’s the limit when it comes to saving!”

Vernice is thankful for the stability that homeownership will bring. “It’s a great thing to be able to own your own home. I will have this home always.” Once moved in, Vernice is excited to have enough space to have Colin’s high school graduation party at her house. “We’re so excited to have space for friends and family to come over and celebrate with us!” Azariah hopes to go back to school or pursue a new career, and Colin is excited for college next year. “I want everyone we’ve met along the way to know that meeting them and having them in our lives has been one of the most beneficial things ever. I’m very grateful to all the volunteers, the Habitat staff, and my sponsor. I hope this is a partnership that will last forever.”
