Every Homeowner Has a Story

Future Habitat Homeowner
Briasha

Briasha is the youngest of five siblings and has two dogs, Nala, and Luna, which she refers to as her “fur babies.” She works on the line at Toyota and has been there a little over a year. In her spare time, she loves to travel and takes every opportunity she gets to visit the beach or the mountains.

Briasha currently rents an apartment that is need of a lot of work. She continuously deals with pests and high utility bills because of the number of cracks around her windows. Her rent is also high and has been steadily increasing each month, making it difficult for her to save money or have a hope of ever having a place of her own.

At first, Briasha was reluctant to apply for a Habitat home because she was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to afford a mortgage. However, at the encouragement of her mother who is also a Habitat homeowner, Briasha decided to take a leap of faith and try for a home. When she learned that she had been accepted into the program, she couldn’t hold back her excitement, sharing the news with everyone at her job.

Since joining the Habitat family, Briasha has been diligently working to complete her required “sweat equity” hours and is determined to achieve her dream of homeownership no matter what it takes. She says, “It’s rough at times, but I want this so badly.” She is thankful for the experience and says she would do it again in a heartbeat. Briasha has learned so much about how to create a budget and do basic home repairs. She even laughs about how she never knew that she had held a hammer incorrectly all her life until the Core Crew showed her a better way to do it.

Briasha can’t wait to get into the new home that she helped build. She is excited to finally be in her “forever home” and to have a place in which her future children can grow up. Until then, she is just excited that her dogs will have a yard in which they can run around and play. Briasha is incredibly grateful for everyone who has helped her along this journey and made her new home a reality. “I just want to thank them from the bottom of my heart…for their time, the jokes, the laughter, and the education…it’s all appreciated.”
